Kalihiwai -
Take a left onto Hwy. 56 from the Princeville entrance. Look for the
Princeville Airport which will be to your right (use as a
landmark) then you'll cross over a large cement bridge that connects
two valleys together, shortly after airport. Continue up the hill and take
the first left that is a real road. If coming from the south and west
sides of island, use the Kilauea gas station as a landmark and take the
first right after the gas station turn off. Follow road to the end and
the beach will begin. Great for swimming, due to the river on the left
side of beach. Also well known for surfing and boogie boarding.
Hanalei -
This beach is located about 10 minutes from
Princeville. Take a
right onto Hwy 56 to Hanalei and take a right onto Aku Rd. The road
will come to a T; then take a right on Weke Rd. and follow it all the way to
the end. This bay has a pier that is a historical monument! The bay is
about 2 miles wide. It`s a favorite hang-out for many local residents.
If you were to take a left on Weke Rd. instead of a right there are other
beach accesses along the way. Just take rights on He`e Rd. (better know
as Pine Trees) or on Anae Rd. Next to the pier and at Pine Trees there
are public bathrooms and showers. This bay is excellent for surfing - it`s known worldwide. It`s also good for swimming & boogie boarding or
just to picnic at!
Lumahai -
Go right onto Hwy 56 heading to Hanalei. Go through Hanalei
and look for mile marker 4 & 5 - Lumahai Beach is there! You will
have crossed over 4 one lane iron bridges. Once you see mile marker 4 go
about another mile and park on the shoulder (make sure you are all the way
off the road) and then hike down the trail to the beach. This is the
beach where they made the movie “SOUTH PACIFIC”. So this is a must
see beach. You can swim there but it`s not recommended (when in doubt stay
out !). Great place for a picnic and or sunbathing. Lumahai also has a
river that's okay to swim in.
Haena -
Take a right out of Princeville onto Hwy 56. Look for mile
marker 9 - you'll be heading towards the end of the road. The park is
right across from the dry cave that's there on the left. This beach is
good for picnicking, swimming, and for sea shell searching.
Polihale -
Take a left out of Princeville onto Hwy. 56 south towards
Lihue. Switch to Hwy. 50 heading west past Waimea and Kekaha. At the
end of the highway continue down the dirt roads through the cane fields
and take a left towards the beach. This is the longest beach in Hawaii and
probably one of the hottest! Not recommended for swimming and it may be
prohibited by your rental car company. Just check before you go!
Beach House -
Take a left once again out of Princeville onto Hwy.56
south and switch to Hwy. 50 west then go south on 520. Take Laqa`I Rd.
towards Spouting Horn. Go 1 mile to the Beach House Restaurant. Park
across the street. Good for some snorkeling, and also swimming.
